The KB..

Four unemployed young  men get a chance to make a few bucks to have a complete meal that is long due. Not knowing about their situation, the friend who brought them the opportunity in the form of a role in a Stage Play tells them to finish their lunch before starting to the auditorium and waits in the living room. Young men, desperate not to lose the opportunity by any chance, pretend to act as if they are having the meal that doesn't exist, by merely passing the empty utensils around, pouring water back and forth between two glasses, praising the taste of the imaginary soups and pickles. The bored friend peeps into the kitchen through the window in the living room ending up finding out what's going on. She then takes them to her house insisting to offer lunch. Each of the young men help preparing the meal. Seconds before they get to eat it, age old, sick grand father of the friend dies. Since it is neither the tradition, not a good gesture to eat food in the house that has a dead person, they abandon the meal and start to help in the rituals. One of the four men, couldn't resist but look towards the plates filled in with fresh food, passionately, all along !
--------

An orthodox Brahmin father, who is also a very good karnatic classical singer and a master in rendering Bilahari ragam, is angry at his liberal son for attempting to simplify the complex karnatic music for the illiterates. On the other hand, he grows affection for one of his obedient students. The student and the daughter of the old man fall in love and the old man agrees for their marriage. A concert is arranged at the wedding venue for the old man to sing karnatic classical in Bilahari tune. Right before the wedding, the student, to take grudge on the old man against a past insult, asks the old man for dowry. When asks what he wants, he tells the old man to sacrifice 'Bilahari' tune for him, for life. Old man's son performs the concert, while the old man is shedding tears !

A young woman, the only bread winner of her large family feels ecstasy when she finds out that her father who abandoned the family several years ago to become a saint, finally returned to home. She tells her boy friend that the responsibility is off of her shoulders now and that she is ready to get married with him. But when she hears form her father that he is not planning to stay back, but only paying a visit, taking a short detour in his cross country spiritual tour, she agitates and tells her father to 'get out' of the house. Her mother and siblings say that she is arrogant and disrespectful !
---------

These are just a few samples of a long list of scenes from the movies of K Balachandar that touched my heart, and bogged my mind. There probably isn't any other filmmaker who wrote and directed characters and movies that were a perfect reflection of life in India of his times, particularly touching the subject of objectivism, poverty, unemployment etc. Since KB turned inactive, our film fraternity not only missed a Filmmaker who made several timeless masterpieces but also a mentor that brought the best out of the actors and stars like the Kamal Hasan and the Rajini Kanth. That might be the reason why, even after three decades, we don't see a star as megalomaniac as Rajini or an actor as top class as Kamal, who could sustain the test of the time.

Remembering and missing KB... !

The alternate view

I read once in a book (విజయానికి ఐదు మెట్లు, by Yandamuri Veerendranath) that sitting in the middle seat of the n/4th row from top gives us the best viewing experience in a movie theater. One of my neighbors once told me his theory that it is best to sit right in the center for Telugu movies and some what around the corner for English movies. I had experience of watching movies in almost empty theaters, choosing the seat that I wanted, dome, IMAX to full packed theaters where I had to sit on the stair cases beside the door (for ప్రేమించుకుందాం రా... in my home town) while the clothes were fully drenched with the sweat. I also had experience of choosing to sit on steps beside the top row leaving the front row seat for the visual spectacular RAVAN. But on the 19th of October, 2014, I had an experience that was different all together.

Sandhya and I hadn't watched a movie together for almost an year in theater, all due to my son Neal (Duggu), few months because of the pregnancy, few months because he is too young to watch a movie. Yesterday, we had decided to break the gap and watch a movie. We know that Duggu would not stay quite and let us watch the movie, but still wanted to try. I remembered watching a movie trailer in which a young kid talks about his very bad day and how his family members realize what he was going through, cursing them to have an equally bad day, etc. I looked up for the movie and it's name turned out to be 'Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day'. Yes, all of that. Showed Sandhya the trailer and she seemed to have liked it. We also called Gopal to check if he and Kanchan wanted to join, and they joined. One another family joined us at the theater and we were all set to watch the movie.

It felt kind of strange to get the stroller into the theater. We placed it around the free space at front of the hall. Carried Duggu in the child seat, and kept it on the seat between Sandhya's and mine. He was quite for some time, took a nap for around 20 minutes. We were able to watch the movie without any disturbance. The kid who played Alexander was cute and doing awesome job. Steve Carell (I remember him as the guy in Date Night and looked up his name after watching the movie) was good too. Duggu then woke up. He wasn't crying or cranky but shouting a little louder :-) Sandhya took the first turn and took him out. On the other side, all the crazy things started happening to this family in the movie. Gopal already said, 'Man, I'm already getting scared ! (to have kids)'. I wanted to check on Sandhya and Duggu, but they came back after a little while. They stayed briefly and had to go out again. I joined them after a bit. That's when I found the alternate view, that is, holding Duggu and watching the movie standing at the ramp (the walk into the theater). It wasn't bad, for it was the first time :-) I watched the scene in which the teenager takes the drivers test, from this exact spot. The driving test lady was amazing :D The start up where Steve goes for the interview was cool. We watched whole rest of the movie from the same view. On our way back home, we told each other that the movie was good and to that we should watch again on Netflix next year.

Thanks Duggu for adding another viewing experience into my list... let's see how long it goes :-)

The scene where the girl performs after having a full dose of cough syrup, from the alternate view.. :-)

Respected Prime Minister at dentist's clinic

A fictitious and funny situation that describes the way our UPA government works -

One day Prime Minister of India Mr. Manmohan Singh visits a dentist's clinic for a check up. Dentist asks him to open his mouth but Manmohan Singh refuses to, as he never doe's so without Mrs Sonia Gandhi's permission.

Dentist tells the PM

Dentist : Well, see Mr. PM, you have to open your mouth at least at my clinic.

Manmohan Singh : I never do so, without Sonia's permission.

Dentist : Erm.... what should we do then ?

Manmohan : Ok, let me call Sonia.

Manmohan takes his cell phone and dials Sonia's number. Sonia picks up the phone and asks,

Sonia : Yes Mr. PM...

Manmohan : Sonia, I got a situation here. I have to open my mouth.

Sonia : Oh no, you are not doing that. You are too honest to open your mouth. What is it about ?

Manmohan : I'm at my dentist's clinic and he asks me so.

Sonia : Aaah.... ok, let me patch Digvijay in.

Sonia gets Mr. Digvijay, the General Secretary of Congress on line and conferences.

Digvijay : Madam, boliye.

Sonia : Digvijay, we have PM on line. There is a situation and I want you to open your mouth for him.

Digvijay : Glad to Madam, what should I say ? Should I re-insist that Rahul is going to be the next PM ?

Sonia : No, he is at dentist's clinic. It might be that they will take a teeth out.

Digvijay : But madam, you know my teeth is of value for more meaningful comments, per say quoting Laden as

Osamaji or linking Mumbai bombings with Saffron terror.

Sonia : You are right. Let me get Chidambaram on line then.

Sonia gets Mr P. Chidambaram, the Home Minister of India on line.

Chidambaram : Sollunga. I mean, tell me Mrs. Sonia, how can I help you ?

Sonia : I have PM and Digvijay on line. Mr. PM is at dentist's office and he needs to open his mouth.

I was thinking if I could take your help.

Chidambaram : Oh, is that about breaking a teeth ? I mean, taking a teeth out ?

Sonia : Yes, how did you guess ?

Chidambaram : Well... Mumbai attacks, Jan Lokpal, Telangana... and I know what exactly I am here for.

Sonia thanks Chidambaram for his quick understanding. Chidambaram fixes his Lungi, takes a look at his mouth in the mirror and starts to the clinic.

Telugu Version (There is an english version below):

English Version:

In parallel with the rapidly growing power of human mind, his needs, in addition his
luxuries and along with these the living standards kept growing. He invented wheel. He invented steam engine. Fitting these two together, he invented steam train. He later went on to invent electric train and now the magnetic train that travels as fast as 300 miles per hour. Such, this endless journey of the search for 'change' has been in tact for generations. As part of it, replacing the faulty Barter, he
invented the concept of money, an entity that stands as the single universal measure of value for any goods or services. But this very basic principle made money so dangerously powerful that it could dictate the phase of the mankind. One of the many forms of such money is Indian Rupee (INR), in short Rupee and this is the story of one such One Rupee coin that was made out of the metal extracted from the mines of Karnataka, molded to its shape in the India Government Mint in Uttar Pradesh by the machinery imported from South Korea, and is shipped from New Delhi to this bank in Andhra Pradesh where it is now, in its own words -

I have been very curious to get out of here into the human world and see the pride in
their faces that my presence brings, the pains that they go through in my absence, the gimmicks they play to get me into their pockets. But as days pass by, my feeling that I will be remaining in this treasury for ever is getting stronger. People come, take money and go but everyone wants thousands and lakhs, not me. Nevertheless, I
never guessed that my fortune walks in the form of Raghu Ram, one of the richest businessmen in the town. He has at least four successful businesses but never visits the bank himself unless the work has some specific importance. He is starting a new auto mobile business and took it as a prestigious deed. So, as a sentiment, he wanted to withdraw the first investment by himself. He has one such another
sentiment and that is what got me out to the world along with him. He withdraws a denomination that ends with a hundred and sixteen rupees for any need that is significantly important and that is 2,01,116 rupees today. To pick that last one rupee, the cashier unpacked a bundle of one rupee coins and put them in the cash counter. In an attempt to pick me up, he picked another one rupee coin and dropped
it back as he had to take a phone call. Finishing the phone call, he picked me up this time and handed over to Raghu Ram. Touching me to his eyes for dropping me on the floor by mistake, slipped me into his pocket. There started my real journey with the human world.

As he arrived home, he placed me in the little cash box and went out on work. Old,
stained, out of shape and stinky.... I hated the fellow coins in the cash box for their ugliness and they felt jealous of me for my beauty. Raghu Ram's son Tarun arrived from school in the evening and nagged Kasturi, his mother for a rupee to buy candies. After resisting for a while, Kasturi gave up and opened the cash box. Without effort, her hand picked me up. After all, I'm new !!

Tarun ran to the nearby candy shop and came back in the same pace, disappointed. Each piece of candy costs two rupees and he couldn't buy any. Kasturi gave him
another five one rupee coins from the same cash box. Tarun once again, ran fast to the candy shop and came back even faster, with smile on his face. For the first time, I felt proud of myself and thanked the fellow coins for bringing me completeness. I figured that 'together we rock' and never in my life hated them again.

In the next two hours, after moving into the hands of few people I ended up in
Yadagiri's hand. Yadagiri is a daily wage hamali labour. Works like a machine for eight to ten hours a day and makes two hundred rupees and upto another hundred extra, if luck favors at all. With that little earnings, his family have plans to shift out of the slum, to get their son well educated, and many more. It is such a great hard work he has to go through and a single day sickness upsets their financial
balance. And for such a painful job, there are hundreds waiting in the queue. This tells what my value is !!

He collected wage after finishing his work for the day and started to home. On his way back home came into his sight, a liquor shop. He couldn't resist the
temptation and decided to spend only 50 rupees. Fifty turned to be hundred and hundred turned to be hundred and fifty. He spent three fourth of the money he earned just in one hour forgetting his wife's words, forgetting his son's education, and above all the pain he went through the whole day to make that money. Do I really have any value ?

That is 'Srishailam Liquor Shop'. With the permit to sell cheap liquor, they
sell cheap liquor, impure cheap liquor, beer, whisky and brandy. Inspite of paying monthly bribes to the excise officers, there is a threat of random rides, and also the tension of alcohol prohibition by the new government after the elections. In addition to all these, the owner of the shop is also worried that he will be tortured to death in the hell after his death for selling liquor. To get relief from all these hassles and tensions, he also pays Srishailam Mallanna (a Hindu god) a monthly bribe. As he is quite a bit busy with business this month, he had decided to send his wife Sujata this time to Srishailam on his behalf.

She stopped by at the liquor shop while on her way to Srishailam and picked some rupee coins up. There are lakhs of money in the Hundis (locked boxes in
temples where divotees drop their offerings). Also kgs of gold. It took Sujata one hour in the queue. She started listing her wishes out and after waiting for a minute the priest told her to move ahead to accommodate the other devotees. She approached a nearby Hundi and opened her purse. I'm excited. She picked up a hundred rupee note
and showing it to the statue of god, dropped into the hundi leaving me in disappointment. With torn clothes, long beards, age old people, motherless children, mothers with children as young as 2 months... there are hundreds of beggars on both sides of the steps.

Sujata took few coins out, including me. I wasn't happy to get into that dirt but hadn't had a choice. She distributed few coins to some of the beggars and then skipped the rest. Thank god, I wasn't out. Sujata moved ahead fast as the sight of few eyes hit me in disappointment.

While I was thinking if I will be back into the Liquor shop again being in
Sujata's purse, her car stopped on a bridge and she opened the purse taking me out. She went out, whispered something in her mind and tossed me into the lake. Having no time to feel disgusted of her stupidity, I fell into the lake. I never imagined that my life would be ending in a lake like this. But unexpectedly in a short time, a
bunch of garbage captured me into it as it moved ahead towards a drain. Far in sight, two young boys apparently friends talking to each other, staying at the edge of the drainage on opposite sides, like solders at the border holding sticks got alerted as they saw the garbage and immersed the tips of the sticks that has the magnetic strip attached. Along with me, few other coins and other iron pieces
got stuck to the magnets. As both the sticks were held together at the same place, they got into a dispute on what belongs to whom and that finally led to a fight. The first one pushed after the other forcibly towards the electrical pole and ran away. As the head was hit to the pole hard, the place was left with blood. This credit, of
igniting a fight between two close friends in a fraction of minutes goes solely to me, the money !!

It is a big circle drawn on the floor with sand. One of the contestants throws a bunch of coins into it. After discussing for a while, one among the remaining contestants points his finger at one of the coins. With a sharp little stone, the first player should now hit any of the coins other than the one that's pointed out. If he could get one of those coins out of the circle, he wins the game and gets all the coins. If not, the game repeats with the next player until someone wins. This
is the game in short. I have been living in fear for past one hour scared of the stone stroke and the time has come. Tall and hefty, this guy looking so angrily at me threw the stone with a great force and I fell four feet away with the power of the stroke. It was so painful and left a mark on my curvy edge. Picking me along with all other coins, he ran to a nearby pan shop to buy something.

Along with a phone call, the shopkeeper also got a bad news. His father who has been in the hospital for last 10 days has passed away. He replied saying that he will be there as soon as possible. Grabbed some cash from the counter, closed the shop and started to the hospital on his scooter. There is no sign of emotion what so ever on his face. As the clock struck three in the afternoon, most of the relatives arrived. The elder son argued that the funeral expenses should be borne by the younger son. Daughter argued that she deserves a share in her father's wealth.

They cried for some time. They pretended that they cried for some more time and
finally started the ritual. Throwing mere loose change on the dead body of their father, they shared the whole assets earned by the old man. After being stumped by everyone who passed by, I grabbed the attention of a gold smith. A country doctor (natu vaidhyudu) approached him the next day morning, along with a man and his son who is around 12 years old. The doctor spoke with the goldsmith for few minutes. The goldsmith went inside, arranged fire and burnt me until I turned red. As the father and the goldsmith held the hands of the boy who is shivering in fear, the doctor approached closer. While the boy shouted in pain, I remained as the witness for the stupidity of the man.

The next day, the goldsmith's son took me to and placed on railway tracks. The train
approached as a bullet. Jealous, pride, satisfaction, sorrow, guilt and disgust.... as each experience remained as a unique memory, I ended my life looking at the happiness in the eyes of the boy.

An affair with a filmmaker

(There is a telugu version below, after the English version).

'First night'....

They were married this morning at 9 AM and now at 10 PM, their first night.

Venkat & Radha. Friends from their childhood. Venkat has respect towards Radha. Radha has love for Venkat. They studied together in school, until Venkat went abroad for his graduation in filmmaking. Now he is back and is working in Ramanaidu Studios. He loved films. He loved filmmaking. To become a successful filmmaker is his ambition. To get its first national award for Telugu cinema and to get its first Oscar award for Indian cinema are his dreams. He had written a story, screenplay, treatment, shot division and floor plan together with a sample demo reel. He has been meeting producers and all of them gave appreciations but none gave an opportunity. Every time he met Radha, he used to express his frustration. He used to say that cinema is everything to him, and that he doesn't even want to get married until he makes a feature film.

But as a common father of a son, Venkat's father, as a common father of a daughter, Radha's father wanted to take the responsibility off their shoulders. Fights, quarrels, love, hesitation, blackmailing, respect... all this finally led to this wedding and now the first night. Radha wanted to tell Venkat that though she didn't want to disturb his aspirations, the fear of losing him made her agree for this marriage. But she couldn't.

Venkat looking into her eyes, said that at least one 'close-up shot' is needed to portray her beautiful eyes, just like for Catherine Zeta Jones in 'The Terminal' or for Divya Vani in 'Pelli Pustakam'. He was just looking into her eyes. Radha wasn't sure if that was love, in his eyes. She woke up at around 2 am in the morning. Looking at Venkat who is in deep sleep, she fell asleep, again hugging him.

Taxi stopped at Venkat's newly rented apartment. As he woke up from sleep in taxi, he saw the building and told the taxi driver to drive a bit back saying that that is an important scene in his life and deserves a slow reveal, starting from a long shot and then a medium and then a close up. Taxi driver felt that he is crazy. Radha felt proud looking at her husbands love towards cinema !!

Cutting a left hand finger and burning a right hand finger Radha cooked a meal for the first time and wanted Venkat to taste it. Big eyes, uncombed hair and spatula in the hand, she looked like Soundrya in 'Ammoru' in the low angle close up. Venkat stood up, told her to move a step back saying that this scene doesn't need a close up quoting Alfred Hichcock's 'Save your close ups' and immediately went back into work. Radha felt sad that he didn't even taste it.

Red, blue, white, jeans, slawars and chudidars.. after trying for half an hour, they didn't like any models and decided to go out. Frustrated sales man whispered saying these people shop to pass time. With anger, Venkat went close to the salesman, grabbed a chair and standing on it warned him to mind his tongue. As Venkat was stepping out of the shop, everyone laughed at him. He didn't observe, but Radha did. Later Radha asked him why he had to stand on the chair and as usual he gave an answer saying 'inferior shot - superior shot' in his complex filmy language.

Sighting towards the water bottle on the table and towards the flower vase behind it Venkat was closing and opening his left and right eyes alternatively. Radha asked him what was he doing and he replied saying that he is practicing 'focal pull'.

He says Continuity, he says characterization. He says cuts, he says retakes. He says shock value. He says genre, he says fade ins. Every thing is cinema for him and no personal life. This isn't love for cinema, this is insanity. This is sadism. He shouldn't have got married if he didn't like to. Giving a break to her thoughts, Radha decides to go home and packs her bag.

As she is about to step out, Venkat arrives from office. She tries to tell him that she is leaving, but he interrupts and tells her not to talk saying that this scene requires him talking. He also says that the nature of the scene demands a breeze and greenery around. He steps aside, switches on the fan, puts around some plants. Angry, Radha decides to be quite and step away. Venkat comes in-front of her and holding her hands, tells that a star actor agreed to do a film with him without making any changes to the story and hands her over the cheque he got as advance. Though she is happy to hear that, wants to go away. As she tries to move away, he holds her hands stronger and asks for apologies for his behavior. He says that he was scared that the marriage could ruin his aspirations and thus the behavior. He also promises her that he wouldn't repeat it. This time, its definitely love in his eyes. As he hugs her, Radha pushes the bag out of his sight hugging him back with more love. As a bunch of flowers cover the scene as in old Telugu films, story takes a happy ending.

Telugu version :

Race with the races...

Narration of a fictitious person of age 80 yrs, at the verge of dying, his experiences with races :

My journey with the races started the day I was born, the moment the white dressed species hit on my butts. There were many such species around me in different colors, different shapes and sizes. They all looked strange. The sound, the feel, the movement, everything looked strange. They moved close to me. The moved away from me. They touch my cheeks, they touched my shoulders. I hated their race, the human race. As I was growing up, as I started going to school, my hate on human race slowly started disappearing. I picked a different race up, 'the teachers race'. I hated them. I hated their brutality, I hated the assignments they give, I hated the punishments they gave. I hated the rules they imposed, I hated the rulers they carried. Only thing that I liked about them is that during my course of association with them, they taught me many and many ways of exploring new races, for the joy of hatred. They taught me what my 'nation' is, encouraged to take this race up and I explored the joy in hating the counter parts like Pakistani race. They taught me what my 'continent' is and I explored the joy of hating its counter parts like European race. They taught me what my 'religion' is but told me not to take this race up for hatred. It was like giving the keys to a thief and telling him not to rob.

Parents, they were no less. They together with a whole bunch of family members and relatives not just taught me new races like 'caste' but also accompanied me in enjoying the hatred basing this race on. We looked at the lower caste people and laughed at them with pity. We looked at the higher caste people and laughed at their arrogance. We didn't stop there but together with all these lower and upper caste people, went on and explored a more generalized race 'religion' that we were taught in schools much deeper and enjoyed the hatred much further. We hated one religion for its dictatorship on another religion. We hated one religion for its extremism on the other religion. A bunch of guys sitting in a rule making place represented an entire religion to us, so as a bunch of guys hiding together planning destruction. A best friend of mine who always inspired me to grow big in life was a Muslim, but that didn't matter. Another best friend of mine who loved me the most was a Christian but that didn't matter too. I learned about religion more in news papers and books than from my real life.

As I was teenager, I hated the parents 'race' for being a nag in my ears all the time. Don't think I was narrow minded, I loved some races too, per say the 'female' race. They looked beautiful, they sounded wonderful, they were too good to be hated. But that was only until that was all at a distance. Their possessiveness, their stupidity, ... I figured out as I moved close to them and made no delay in hating their race, the 'female' race. I still love them on the front pages of magazines, though.

Language, a wonderful means. Syllables of every language other than the ones those I know to speak sounded to me like stones in a metal box. I wondered how can there be poets in those languages !! Not just that, as I started working with the native speakers of those languages, I understood that they are good at team politics and hated their race together with the mates in my race. But there was always a need to mingle with them to hate another different race, the managers race. We together forgetting our language barriers, hated the managers race for the commanding they held on us. As I further grew at my work place, we all mingled together to hate people basing on the color based races. The best thing about this is the ease with which we can figure them out. You don't need to know their background, you don't even need to talk to them. Just see their skin color and can figure out their race.

In all these eighty years of my journey with race I only transformed my self from belonging to one race to another, I only changed my genres of races but never left the happiness of being a racist. When I was a teenager, I hated parents race. When I was a father, I hated teenage race. When I was a Telanganate, I hated the Andhra race. When I was a Telugu, together with Andhrates I hated the Tamil race. The transformation was amazing, so as the happiness. But, was that all really happiness ? That's pleasure for sure but I don't know if hatred can bring happiness. I never had time to think about it, even now. Now, at the verge of dying, I'm busy with the imaginations of the pleasure that the new genres of races at the place where my soul is going to move on is going to give me. My journey is going to end, but not that with the races. The journey, to be rhythmic the race with the races is never ending...

I will share the future experiences later, well, if there is internet connectivity there !!

Bye for now.
