An affair with a filmmaker

'First night'....

They were married this morning at 9 AM and now at 10 PM, their first night.

Venkat & Radha. Friends from their childhood. Venkat has respect towards Radha. Radha has love for Venkat. They studied together in school, until Venkat went abroad for his graduation in filmmaking. Now he is back and is working in Ramanaidu Studios. He loved films. He loved filmmaking. To become a successful filmmaker is his ambition. To get its first national award for Telugu cinema and to get its first Oscar award for Indian cinema are his dreams. He had written a story, screenplay, treatment, shot division and floor plan together with a sample demo reel. He has been meeting producers and all of them gave appreciations but none gave an opportunity. Every time he met Radha, he used to express his frustration. He used to say that cinema is everything to him, and that he doesn't even want to get married until he makes a feature film.

But as a common father of a son, Venkat's father, as a common father of a daughter, Radha's father wanted to take the responsibility off their shoulders. Fights, quarrels, love, hesitation, blackmailing, respect... all this finally led to this wedding and now the first night. Radha wanted to tell Venkat that though she didn't want to disturb his aspirations, the fear of losing him made her agree for this marriage. But she couldn't.

Venkat looking into her eyes, said that at least one 'close-up shot' is needed to portray her beautiful eyes, just like for Catherine Zeta Jones in 'The Terminal' or for Divya Vani in 'Pelli Pustakam'. He was just looking into her eyes. Radha wasn't sure if that was love, in his eyes. She woke up at around 2 am in the morning. Looking at Venkat who is in deep sleep, she fell asleep, again hugging him.

Taxi stopped at Venkat's newly rented apartment. As he woke up from sleep in taxi, he saw the building and told the taxi driver to drive a bit back saying that that is an important scene in his life and deserves a slow reveal, starting from a long shot and then a medium and then a close up. Taxi driver felt that he is crazy. Radha felt proud looking at her husbands love towards cinema !!

Cutting a left hand finger and burning a right hand finger Radha cooked a meal for the first time and wanted Venkat to taste it. Big eyes, uncombed hair and spatula in the hand, she looked like Soundrya in 'Ammoru' in the low angle close up. Venkat stood up, told her to move a step back saying that this scene doesn't need a close up quoting Alfred Hichcock's 'Save your close ups' and immediately went back into work. Radha felt sad that he didn't even taste it.

Red, blue, white, jeans, slawars and chudidars.. after trying for half an hour, they didn't like any models and decided to go out. Frustrated sales man whispered saying these people shop to pass time. With anger, Venkat went close to the salesman, grabbed a chair and standing on it warned him to mind his tongue. As Venkat was stepping out of the shop, everyone laughed at him. He didn't observe, but Radha did. Later Radha asked him why he had to stand on the chair and as usual he gave an answer saying 'inferior shot - superior shot' in his complex filmy language.

Sighting towards the water bottle on the table and towards the flower vase behind it Venkat was closing and opening his left and right eyes alternatively. Radha asked him what was he doing and he replied saying that he is practicing 'focal pull'.

He says Continuity, he says characterization. He says cuts, he says retakes. He says shock value. He says genre, he says fade ins. Every thing is cinema for him and no personal life. This isn't love for cinema, this is insanity. This is sadism. He shouldn't have got married if he didn't like to. Giving a break to her thoughts, Radha decides to go home and packs her bag.

As she is about to step out, Venkat arrives from office. She tries to tell him that she is leaving, but he interrupts and tells her not to talk saying that this scene requires him talking. He also says that the nature of the scene demands a breeze and greenery around. He steps aside, switches on the fan, puts around some plants. Angry, Radha decides to be quite and step away. Venkat comes in-front of her and holding her hands, tells that a star actor agreed to do a film with him without making any changes to the story and hands her over the cheque he got as advance. Though she is happy to hear that, wants to go away. As she tries to move away, he holds her hands stronger and asks for apologies for his behavior. He says that he was scared that the marriage could ruin his aspirations and thus the behavior. He also promises her that he wouldn't repeat it. This time, its definitely love in his eyes. As he hugs her, Radha pushes the bag out of his sight hugging him back with more love. As a bunch of flowers cover the scene as in old Telugu films, story takes a happy ending.

మొదటి రాత్రి. ఇంకాస్త అర్థమయ్యేలా చెప్పాలంటే ఫస్ట్ నైట్. వెంకట్, రాధ. ఉదయం తొమ్మిది గంటలకి పెళ్లయ్యింది, ఇప్పుడు రాత్రి పది గంటలకి ఫస్ట్ నైట్. ఇద్దరూ చిన్నప్పటి నుండి స్నేహితులు. వెంకట్‌కి రాధ అంటే గౌరవం. రాధకి వెంకట్ అంటే ప్రేమ. ఫిల్మ్ మేకింగ్ లో గ్రాడ్యూషన్ కోసమని వెంకట్ అమెరికా వెళ్లేంత వరకు ఇద్దరూ కలిసే చదువుకున్నారు. వెంకట్ అమెరికా నుండి తిరిగి వచ్చాక రామానాయుడు స్టూడియోలో ఉద్యోగంలో చేరాడు. ఎప్పటికైనా ఒక గొప్ప ఫిల్మ్ మేకర్ అవ్వాలని, మరపు రాని సినీమాలు తియ్యాలని ఆశయం. తెలుగు సినిమా కి ఇప్పటి వరకు రాని నేషనల్ అవార్డ్‌ని, భారతీయ సినిమాకి ఇప్పటి వరకు రాని ఆస్కార్ అవార్డ్‌ని సంపాదించి పెట్టాలని ఆశ. మొదటి సినిమాకి అవసరమైన కథ, స్క్రీన్ ప్లే, ట్రీట్‌మెంట్, షాట్ డివిజన్, ఫ్లోర్ ప్లాన్ తో సహా ఒక చిన్న డెమో వీడియోని కూడా తయారు చేసుకొని ప్రొడ్యూసర్లని కలుస్తూనే ఉన్నాడు. కానీ తన స్టొరీ విన్న ప్రొడ్యూసర్లు ఇప్పటి వరకు తనకి అప్ప్రిషీయెషన్ ఇస్తున్నారేగానీ ఆపర్ట్యునిటి మాత్రం ఇవ్వట్లేదు. తన భాధని కలిసిన ప్రతీ సారి రాధ కి చెప్పుకొనే వాడు వెంకట్. సినిమానే తనకి సర్వస్వమని, మొదటి సినీమా తీసే వరకు పెళ్లి కూడా చేసుకోనని అనేవాడు తనతో.

కానీ ఒక సగటు కొడుక్కి తండ్రిగా వెంకట్ తండ్రి, ఒక సగటు కూతురుకి తండ్రిగా రాధ తండ్రి తమ భాధ్యత తీర్చుకోవాలనుకొవడం వల్ల, ఆరు నెలలుగా జరిగిన గొడవలు, ఏడుపులు, పెడబొబ్బలు, ప్రేమ, గౌవరం, బ్లాక్ మెయిలింగ్, సెంటిమెంటు, మొహమాటం... అన్ని కలిసి ఇష్టం లేకపోయినా చివరకి పెళ్లీ, ఆ తరువాత ఈ ఫస్ట్ నైట్. తనకిప్పుడీ పెళ్లి ఇష్టం లేదని, తన మొదటి సినిమా వరకు ఆగాలని ఉందని, కానీ కాదంటే ఎక్కడ తనని కోల్పోవాల్సి వస్తుందేమోనని ఒప్పుకున్నాననీ, తనని క్షమించాలనీ తన ఆశయం కొరకు అన్ని విధాలా తోడ్పడతాననీ పెల్లయిన వెంటనే రాధ వెంకట్ కి చెప్పాలనుకుంది కానీ చెప్పలేక పోయింది.

సిగ్గు, బిడియం, ఆనందం తో నిండి ఉన్న తన కళ్లని చూస్తూ వెంకట్ తన అందం తన కళ్లలోనే ఉందని, తన అందాన్ని ఎలివేట్ చెయ్యాలంటే 'ద టెర్మినల్ ' లో కాథరిన్ జెట జొన్స్ ని, పెళ్లి పుస్తకం సినిమాలో దివ్య వాణిని చూపించినట్టు కనీసం ఒక్క ఎక్స్ట్రీమ్ క్లోజప్ ఐనా అవసరమని అంటూ అలా కళ్ల వైపే చూడ సాగాడు. ఆ చుపులో ఉంది ప్రేమో కాదో రాధకి అర్థమవలేదు. ఉదయం దాదాపు రెండున్నర అవుతుండగా మెలుకువ వచ్చిన రాధ ఆదమరచి నిద్ర పోతున్న వెంకట్ ని చూసి తన గుండెల పై తల వాల్చి మళ్లీ నిద్రలోకి జారుకుంది.

లగేజీ తో కూడిన టాక్సీ అమీర్ పేట్ లో తను కొత్తగా అద్దెకి తీసుకున్న అపార్ట్‌మెంట్ దగ్గరికి వచ్చి ఆగడంతో వెంకట్ కి మెలకువ వచ్చింది. లైఫ్ లో ఇంత ఇంపార్టెంట్ సీన్ ని ఇలా డైరెక్టు గా స్టార్ట్ చెయ్యకూదడని, లాంగ్ షాట్ తో మొదలు పెట్టి, తరువాత మీడియం, ఆ తరువాత క్లోజప్ షాట్స్ తో ప్రొసీడ్ అవ్వాలని అంటూ, వెనక్కి వెళ్లమని డ్రైవర్ కి చెప్తాడు. ఆ మాట విని డ్రైవర్ విస్తు పోగా రాధ ఆనందంతో పొంగి పోతుంది, తన భర్తకి సినిమా మీద ఉన్న ప్రేమని చూసి.

ఒక చేతి వేలు తెగగా, మరో చేతి వేలు కాలగా మొదటి సారి వంట చేసి రుచి చూసి ఎలా ఉందో చెప్పాలాంటూ వెంకట్ వద్దకి వచ్చిన రాధ చెదిరిన జుట్టు, పెద్ద పెద్ద కళ్లు, చేతిలో గరిటేతో వెంకట్‌కి అమ్మోరు సినిమాలో సౌందర్యలా కనిపించింది, లొ అంగిల్ క్లొజప్ లో. 'సేవ్ యువర్ క్లొజప్స్' అని ఆల్ఫ్రెడ్ హిచ్‌కాక్ చెప్పారని, ఈ సీన్‌కి క్లోజప్ అవసరం లేదు కనక కాస్త వెనక్కి వెల్లి ఓవర్ ద షోల్డర్ మీడియం షాట్ లో నిల్చోమని చెప్పి పనిలోకి జారుకుంటాడు వెంకట్‌. ఇంతకీ వంట ఎలా ఉందో చెప్పలేదని రాధకి కోపం వస్తుంది.

ఎరుపు, నలుపు, పసుపు.... జీన్స్, సల్వార్, చిడిదార్.. ఇలా అరగంటకి పైగా చూసి, మోడల్స్ ఎమీ నచ్చలేదని బయటికి వెల్తుండగా ఊరికే పనీ పాటా లేకుండా తల తినడానికి వస్తారిలాంటి వాల్లంటూ నసుగుతున్న సేల్స్‌మాన్ ని చూసి వెనక్కి వెళ్లిన వెంకట్ కుర్చీ దగ్గరగా లాగి దాని పై నిల్చొని సేల్స్‌మాన్ కళ్లలోకి కళ్లు పెట్టి చూస్తూ నోరు పారేసుకోవద్దనీ వార్నింగ్ ఇచ్చి వస్తాడు. తిరిగి వెళ్తున్న వెంకట్‌కేసి నవ్వుకుంటారు షాపులో వాల్లంతా. కుర్చీ ఎందుకు ఎక్కవల్సి వచ్చిందని రాధ ప్రశ్నిస్తే సదా మామూలుగా 'ఇన్‌ఫీరియర్ ఏంగిల్ - సుపీరియర్ ఏంగిల్ ' అంటూ అర్థం కాని భాషలో ఏదో చెబుతాడు వెంకట్.

డ్రాయింగ్ టేబుల్ మీద ఉన్న వాటర్ బాటిల్ వైపు, దాని వెనకాల పూల కుండీలో ఉన్న మొక్క వైపు ఒక కన్ను తరువాత మరో కన్ను మూస్తూ, తెరుస్తూ చూస్తున్న వెంకట్ ని ఏం చేస్తున్నావని అడిగితే ఫోకల్ పుల్ ప్రాక్టీసు చేస్తున్నానని చెబుతాడు. డైనింగ్ టేబుల్ దగ్గర నిన్నటిలానే కూర్చోమంటాడు, కంటిన్యుటీ అంటాడు. ఎక్కువగా నవ్వితే వద్దంటాడు, క్యారెక్టరైజెషన్ అంటాడు. షాక్ వ్యాల్యూ అంటాడు, రీటేక్ అంటాడు. జానర్ అంటాడు, డిసాల్వ్ అంటాడు. పెళ్లైన ఒక సరదా లేదు, సంతోషం లేదు. సినిమా అంటే ఇష్టం ఉండవచ్చు కానీ ఇది పిచ్చి. ఇష్టం లేకుండా పెళ్లి చేసుకొని ఉండవచ్చు, కానీ ఇది సాడిజం. ఇంక తనవల్ల కాదని, తన బ్యాగు సర్దుకొని పుట్టింటికి బయలుదేరుతుంది రాధ.

ఇంటి నుండి బయటికి వెళ్తుండగా, ఎదురుగా వస్తాడు వెంకట్. కోపంగా రాధ ఇంటికి వెళ్తున్నానని చెప్ప బోతుండగా ఆపమని వారించి ఈ సీన్ కి డైలాగ్ తనే చెప్పాలని, సీన్ నేచర్ కి సింబాలిక్‌గా జుట్టు ఎగిరేట్టుగా గాలి, పచ్చని వాతావరణం అవసరమని అంటూ టేబుల్ ఫ్యాన్ స్విచ్ వేసి, కొన్ని పూల మొక్కలని చుట్టూ అమర్చుతాడు. రాధకి ఇంకా చిరాకెస్తుంది. మాట్లాడకుండా బయటికి వెళ్ళే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తుంది. వెంటనే వెంకట్ తనకి ఎదురుగా వచ్చి బుజాల్ని పట్టుకొని తన కథ నచ్చి ఒక స్టార్ హీరో కథ లో ఎలాంటి మార్పులు లేకుండానే సినిమా చెయ్యడానికి ఒప్పుకున్నాడని, షూటింగ్ ఇంకో నెలలో ప్రారంభమవచ్చని చెప్పి అడ్వాన్సుగా ఇచ్చిన చెక్ ని రాధ చేతిలో పెడతాడు. రాధకి సంతొషమేసినా, తను చెప్పాలనుకున్న విషయాన్ని చెప్పి బయలుదేరలనుకుంటుంది. మళ్లీ తనని మాట్లాడవద్దని వారిస్తూ తనకా పెళ్లి ఇష్టం ఉన్నా, అది సినిమాకి ఎక్కడ ఆటంకం అవుతుందోనని మొదట ఒప్పుకోలేదని, సినిమాని మర్చిపోకూడదని ఇప్పటివరకూ అలా ప్రవర్తించానని, ఇక పై అలా చెయ్యననీ, తనని క్షమించాలని చెబుతాడు. ఈ సారి తన కళ్లలో ఉంది ఖఛ్ఛితంగా ప్రేమే. వెంకట్ తనని గట్టిగా కౌగిలించుకోగా అతని కంట పడకుండా రాధ బ్యాగుని పక్కకి తోస్తుంది, మరింత ప్రేమగా హత్తుకుంటూ. పాత తెలుగు సినిమాలోలా పూల గుత్తి అడ్డు రాగా కథ సుఖాంతమవుతుంది.
